China contributed the largest deficit, with its trade surplus resulting in a US$319.1 billion deficit for the US throughout last year. Mexico followed with US$175.9 billion.

Trading Economics notes that the superpower has experienced consistent trade deficits since 1976, a consequence of high imports of oil and consumer goods.

However, the trade deficit began to surge again from March 2022, as several US companies raced to secure goods before the Trump administration tariffs took effect.
