According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia imported approximately 16.86 million tons of crude oil in 2024. This volume decreased by 5.5% compared to 2023 (year-on-year/yoy).

However, in 2024, the import volume of refined oil products surged by approximately 35% (yoy) to 36.89 million tons. These refined oil products encompass various processed crude oil products, such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel oil, aviation fuel, and others.

Combining crude oil and refined oil imports, Indonesia's total oil import volume in 2024 reached 53.74 million tons, an increase of 19% (yoy).

According to PT Pertamina (Persero) President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri, Indonesia must import oil because it cannot yet meet its needs independently.

He stated that Indonesia is unable to meet approximately 40% of its crude oil needs and 42% of its domestic fuel (BBM) requirements.
