Indonesia's Traditional Market Distribution 2024: East Java Has the Most

Data from the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that there were 17,443 traditional markets in Indonesia in 2024.

Based on their distribution, East Java has the highest number nationally, with 2,574 units this year. This includes 2,351 units with managers, 158 units without managers, and 65 additional markets outside the market directory prelist updating (UDP-24).

Second is Central Java with 2,243 units. The breakdown is: 2,060 units with managers, 103 units without managers, and 80 additional markets.

Third is West Java with 1,136 market units. The details are: 1,026 markets with managers, 66 without managers, and 44 additional markets.

Outside the top three, the number of markets is below 1,000 units.

Following are North Sumatra (958), South Sumatra (951), Riau (825), South Sulawesi (774), Lampung (683), East Nusa Tenggara (509), and West Sumatra (497) in the top 10.

Meanwhile, the provinces with the lowest number of traditional markets are South Papua (29), Southwest Papua (38), and West Papua (39).

Of the 17,443 traditional markets in Indonesia, 16,842 are recorded as still operating.

Of this number, 15,217 units are traditional markets with managers. The remaining 1,625 units are markets without managers.

In addition, there are 601 additional traditional markets outside the market directory prelist updating (UDP-24).
