Top 10 Largest Modern Retail Outlets in Indonesia, Alfamart Ranked Second

Retail company Alfamart has closed 400 of its outlets across Indonesia due to rising rental costs. This was confirmed by Alfamart's Corporate Affairs Director, Solihin, of PT Sumber Alfaria Trijaya Tbk (AMRT).

According to Katadata, this decision was made after numerous landlords significantly increased land rental prices.

"For example, if we rent vacant land from an owner for Rp 50 million per year with a 10-year contract, the price won't be the same the following year. Continuing the lease would make the cost too high," he said in a conversation with Katadata.co.id on Monday, December 16, 2024.

Alfamart outlets are widespread in Indonesia. AMRT data shows Alfamart had 19,087 outlets as of December 2023, making it the second-largest modern retail store chain in terms of the number of outlets.

By region, Alfamart's outlets are distributed as follows: 40.3% in Java (excluding Jabodetabek), 32.5% outside Java, and 27.2% in Jabodetabek.

Indomaret has the most outlets among modern retail stores in Indonesia, with 22,196 outlets in the same period, surpassing Alfamart.

Alfamidi is ranked third with 2,186 outlets, followed by Lawson (674 outlets), Circle K (487 outlets), and Guardian (346 outlets).

Then there's Dan+Dan (317 outlets), Superindo (232 outlets), Watson (160 outlets), and Hypermart (109 outlets) in seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth place, respectively.
