Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that iron and steel imports reached 13.81 million tons in 2023, valued at US$11.38 billion.

China has been the largest supplier of iron and steel to Indonesia for at least the past seven years.

The volume reached 3.6 million tons in 2017, but fluctuated afterward. It was recorded at 2.83 million tons in 2018; 2.89 million tons in 2019; and 1.83 million tons in 2020, the lowest in seven years.

The volume increased to 2.51 million tons in 2021 and further grew to 2.71 million tons in 2022.

The latest data for 2023 shows 3.711 million tons, the highest since 2017. The import value in 2023 was US$3.09 billion.

Despite fluctuations in shipments from China, its volume remains above other major exporting countries such as Japan and South Korea.

In 2023, Japan exported 2.39 million tons of iron and steel to Indonesia, while South Korea exported 906,400 tons.
