Swiftlet Nest Becomes a Leading Export in Indonesia's Livestock Sector

Swiftlet nests are a mainstay of national livestock export. Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the export volume of swiftlet nests reached 1,300 tons with a value of US$540.4 million, or the equivalent of Rp7.8 trillion (at an exchange rate of Rp14,482/US$), in 2020.

The export volume of swiftlet nests in 2020 was similar to the previous year. However, their export value surged by 48.5% compared to 2019. Furthermore, this value represents 86.6% of total livestock exports.

The export volume of swiftlet nests showed an increasing trend from 2013 to 2017, then stagnated until 2020. Meanwhile, the export value of swiftlet nests showed an increase starting in 2016, supported by rising prices.

China and Taiwan are the largest markets for Indonesian swiftlet nest exports. This is because 91.78% of swiftlet nest exports last year went to these two countries.

Specifically, exports to China reached US$416.8 million, while exports to Taiwan amounted to US$79.2 million. Meanwhile, DKI Jakarta, East Java, and West Java are the largest swiftlet nest exporting regions nationally.
