Indonesian Herbal Plants and Spices Generate Trillions of Rupiah in the Global Market

Indonesia is rich in natural resources with economic value in the global market. These range from minerals such as coal and nickel, to spices and medicinal plants used to treat various diseases.

According to research by the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Indonesia is home to 80% of the world's medicinal plants. The Negeri Rempah Foundation also notes that Indonesia has the most diverse range of spices in Southeast Asia.

Increased Exports of Medicinal Plants and Spices

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that the volume of national exports of medicinal, aromatic, and spice plants from January to November 2021 totaled 272.73 million kg.

This volume increased by 11.28% compared to exports in the same period of 2020, which amounted to 245.09 million kg.

The value of exports of medicinal, aromatic, and spice plants from January to November 2021 also increased to US$702.77 million, or approximately Rp10.07 trillion.

This value increased by 27.58% compared to sales in the same period of the previous year, which was US$550.87 million, or approximately Rp7.8 trillion.

The main export destinations for Indonesian medicinal, aromatic, and spice plants in 2021 were as follows:

1. Thailand

2. Iran

Volume: 28,308,059 kg
Value: US$53,991,263

3. India

Volume: 24,170,021 kg
Value: US$68,593,923

4. Bangladesh

Volume: 16,651,010 kg
Value: US$34,753,173

5. United States

Volume: 13,464,178 kg
Value: US$81,736,399

Centers for the production of medicinal, aromatic, and spice plants in Indonesia are spread across Jambi, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, Papua, Riau, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, South Sumatra, and Yogyakarta Special Region.
