Indonesian households manage waste in various ways. Sadly, burning is the most common method chosen by the public.

This is according to a 2022 survey by Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS). This method, which contributes to air pollution, was chosen by 65.54% of the 75,000 households sampled in the survey.

Other dangerous methods include burying waste (12.86%), discarding it in rivers, drains, or waterways (7.96%), and dumping it indiscriminately (7.33%).

The BPS explains that the data shows an inverse relationship between waste management methods (burning, burying, discarding in waterways, and indiscriminate dumping) and economic status.

"The lower the household's economic status, the higher the percentage of households that have not yet implemented proper waste management," the BPS wrote in its report.

Safer methods, such as having waste collected by sanitation workers, were chosen by 26.56%. The BPS notes that the percentage of waste collection in urban areas is ten times higher than in rural areas.

"This is likely related to the less developed waste management infrastructure in rural areas compared to urban areas, in addition to the generally more traditional waste management practices of rural communities," the BPS wrote.

Other safer methods, such as disposal at temporary waste collection points (TPS), composting, handing waste over to waste banks, and recycling, account for a relatively small percentage, as shown in the graph.
