The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Indonesia's rice imports in January 2024 reached 443,000 tons, valued at US$279.2 million.

The volume increased by approximately 82% year-on-year (yoy) compared to January 2023, which was only 243,660 tons. The value increased by approximately 135% (yoy).

In January 2024, most rice imports originated from Thailand, totaling 237,000 tons with a value of US$153 million.

Other significant suppliers included Pakistan (129,000 tons, valued at US$79.3 million) and Myanmar (41,600 tons, valued at US$23.98 million).

Combined imports from other countries amounted to approximately 35,400 tons, valued at US$22.92 million.

According to the Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar, these imported rice stocks are not immediately released to the market but follow government policy.

"Rice imports depend on government policy, so we cannot predict import patterns with certainty, as they depend on the import policies set," Amalia stated in a press conference on Thursday, February 15, 2024.
