Indonesia's batik exports have been declining in recent years. According to data from the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin), batik exports were valued at US$803.3 million with a weight of 35.2 million tons in 2018.
Batik export value decreased by 3.37% to US$776.2 million in 2019. Similarly, export volume decreased by 7.6% to 32.5 million tons.
The following year, Indonesia's batik exports decreased again by 31.3% to US$532.7 million. The volume of batik exported fell by 28.8% to 23.1 million tons.
Batik export value reached US$157.84 million in the first quarter of 2021. The volume of batik exported during this period was 6.64 million tons.
Despite the decline, the Ministry of Industry still considers the batik industry to have a significant contribution to the Indonesian economy. This is because the batik industry creates a large number of jobs.
According to Kemenperin's records, the industry has absorbed 200,000 workers and 47,000 business units across 101 regional centers in Indonesia. Based on this, the government prioritizes the development of the domestic batik industry.
