Indonesia Received 1.04 Million Foreign Tourist Visits in March 2024

Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), there were 1.04 million visits from foreign tourists (wisman) to Indonesia in March 2024.

This figure is down 1.91% compared to the previous month (month-on-month/mom). However, year-on-year (year-on-year/yoy), the number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia increased by 19.86% compared to March 2023.

BPS stated that the number of foreign tourist visits in March 2024 far exceeded the conditions at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. In March 2020, the number of foreign tourist visits was recorded at only 486,160.

The majority of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in March 2024 used air transport, namely 682,440 visits. This is equivalent to 65.5% of the total foreign tourist visits during that period.

Furthermore, there were 155,980 foreign tourist visits via sea transport (14.97%) and 21,380 visits via land transport (2.05%). Meanwhile, foreign tourist visits to Indonesia crossing border crossings totaled 182,060 (14.47%).

According to their country of origin, the most numerous foreign tourists came from Malaysia, with 160.3 million visits (15.4%). This was followed by tourists from Australia with 124.2 million visits (11.9%); Singapore with 120 million visits (11.5%); China with 94.4 million visits (9.1%); and Timor Leste with 62.8 million visits (6%).

Cumulatively, the number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia from January to March 2024 reached 3.03 million visitors, a surge of 25.43% (yoy) compared to the same period last year.

"This achievement is above the number of visits from January to March 2020 (at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic), which only reached 2.65 million visits," wrote BPS in its report.
