The Number of Tourist Attractions in Indonesia Increased in 2024

According to a report by the Statistics Indonesia (BPS), in 2024, Indonesia's tourism sector showed positive performance with foreign tourist arrivals reaching 13.90 million, an increase of 19.05% (year-on-year/yoy).

"Similarly, domestic tourists made 1.02 billion trips, an increase of 21.61% from 839.67 million trips in 2023," BPS explained in its Tourism Attraction Statistics 2024.

BPS explained that tourism is one of the economic drivers, supported by new investment activity and infrastructure development.

This encourages the government and industry players to innovate and introduce new, attractive destinations.

Consequently, in recent years, Indonesia has experienced a significant increase in the number of commercial tourist attractions.

In 2024 alone, BPS stated, the number of commercial tourist attractions (ODTW) in Indonesia was 4,557 businesses, an increase of 8.35% (yoy).

The increase in commercial ODTW has also occurred annually during the 2020-2024 period, as shown in the graph above.

In 2024, the majority of commercial ODTW in the country fell into the category of natural tourist attractions, totaling 1,570 businesses (34.45%), followed by water-based tourism with 1,441 businesses (31.62%), and artificial/man-made tourism with 719 businesses (15.78%).

"Meanwhile, the proportions for entertainment and recreation, cultural tourism, and tourism areas were 10.09%, 7.90%, and 0.15%, respectively," BPS stated.
