United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the country from the World Health Organization (WHO).
He issued the order on Monday, January 20, 2025, local time, shortly after his official inauguration.
"The WHO cheated us. Everyone cheated the United States, and that's enough. This won't happen again," Trump said, as reported by Reuters on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
Trump argued that the WHO burdened the US with disproportionately high funding contributions compared to other major countries, such as China.
Through the signing of this executive order, the US will begin the process of withdrawing from the WHO within 12 months. This will result in the US halting all funding contributions to the WHO.
According to WHO data, their projected budget for the 2024-2025 period is US$6.55 billion, with a total of US$4.62 billion in funding already disbursed.
During that period, the US contributed US$678.4 million, equivalent to 14.53% of the WHO's total funding.
