The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported 1.33 million visits from foreign tourists (wisman) to Indonesia in August 2024.

This figure represents a 2.23% month-to-month (mtm) increase. Year-on-year (yoy), the number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia surged by 18.30% compared to August 2023.

The majority of foreign tourists in August 2024 entered Indonesia through main entry points (1.18 million visits), followed by border crossings (162,290 visits).

By mode of transportation, 987,550 foreign tourists arrived by air. A further 163,690 arrived by sea, and 26,410 by land.

In August 2024, the largest number of foreign tourists came from Malaysia (14.1%), followed by Australia (11.5%), China (9.4%), Singapore (9.4%), and Timor Leste (5.1%).

Cumulatively, the number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia from January to August 2024 reached 9.09 million. This figure shows a 20.38% cumulative-to-cumulative (ctc) growth compared to the same period last year.

"The total cumulative number of foreign tourist visits up to August 2024 is the highest since 2020," said the Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, in an online press conference on Tuesday (1/10/2024).

However, she noted that compared to the January-August 2019 period (pre-COVID-19 pandemic), this number is still relatively lower.
