International tourist arrivals by air plummeted in March 2021.

The number of foreign tourist visits (wisman) to Indonesia reached 132,597 in March 2021. This figure plummeted by 72.73% compared to March 2020, which reached 486,155 visits.

A detailed breakdown shows that air travel saw the sharpest decline in foreign tourist arrivals, at 95%. In March 2020, the number of foreign tourist arrivals via air was recorded at 255,067. A year later, only 12,852 foreign tourists arrived by air.

Foreign tourist arrivals via sea reached 111,323 in March 2021. This number decreased by 63.30% compared to the same month last year, which was 40,854 visits.

Meanwhile, foreign tourist arrivals via land reached 78,891 in March 2021. The decrease in visits through this entry point was only 34.13% compared to March 2020, which reached 119,765 visits.

The decrease in foreign tourist visits occurred due to the ongoing implementation of micro-scale Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM) in Java and Bali in March 2021. This was implemented because cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus were high at the beginning of the year.
