Only 15% of Customers Were Served by Fixed Broadband Internet Networks in 2019

The Indonesian government has built the Palapa Ring fiber optic telecommunications infrastructure project, targeting 36,000 kilometers across Indonesia. However, not all areas can enjoy fixed broadband internet services.

According to 2019 data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the average number of households with access to fixed broadband internet services in Indonesia was only 14.98% of the total. Meanwhile, only eight provinces had fixed broadband internet usage above the national average.

This comprises four provinces in Java and four outside Java. The highest percentage was recorded in DKI Jakarta at 82%, followed by North Kalimantan at 38.9%.

Meanwhile, the percentage of customers who can enjoy fixed broadband internet services in 26 provinces is below the national average. In fact, 13 provinces have less than 1% of customers served by fixed broadband internet.

These 13 provinces include West Kalimantan (0.9%), West Papua (0.09%), North Sulawesi (0.08%), Papua (0.08%), Central Kalimantan (0.07%), South Kalimantan (0.07%), Central Sulawesi (0.07%), Maluku (0.05%), West Sulawesi (0.04%), South Sulawesi (0.03%), Southeast Sulawesi (0.03%), Gorontalo (0.03%), and North Maluku (0.03%).
