Social media has been the primary source of information for Indonesian citizens over the past three years.
This is evident from a survey report, a collaboration between the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemenkominfo) and the Katadata Insight Center (KIC), titled *Digital Literacy Status in Indonesia 2022*.
According to the report, respondents who use social media as their primary source of information constitute the largest proportion, exceeding other media types such as television, online news sites, print media (newspapers and magazines), and government websites.
However, the proportion of respondents using social media as an information source in 2022 decreased compared to the previous year.
“The sources commonly accessed for information over the past three years tend to remain the same. Social media is the largest source of information for 72.6% of respondents in 2022,” stated the Kemenkominfo and KIC team in their report.
During the 2020-2022 period, television and online news sites consistently ranked as the second and third most preferred information sources, with proportions of 60% and 27.5% respectively in 2022.
Despite lagging behind social media, the use of television and online media has steadily increased since 2020. The proportion of print media users has also continued to grow, as shown in the graph above.
Meanwhile, radio was the least used information source by respondents over the past three years. Its user proportion has steadily declined since 2020, reaching only 2.9% in 2022.
Kemenkominfo and KIC conducted this survey among 10,000 internet users aged 13-70, spread across 34 provinces and 514 regencies/cities in Indonesia.
The survey was conducted from August to September 2022 through face-to-face interviews. Sampling was done using multistage random sampling, with a margin of error of approximately 0.98% and a 95% confidence interval.
Respondents had diverse backgrounds, including housewives, entrepreneurs, employees, students, farmers, and others. The complete survey report can be downloaded via this link: https://survei.literasidigital.id/.
