According to a Rakuten Insight survey, the majority, or 83%, of Indonesian respondents frequently read books via smartphone.

This rate of smartphone use as a reading medium is higher than that of other Asian countries surveyed, such as Vietnam (80%) and the Philippines (72%).

Meanwhile, only 12% of Indonesian respondents more frequently read physical books. Another 1% typically read via tablet.

This contrasts sharply with Japan, where respondents read physical books more often, at 71%, the highest among the 13 countries surveyed.

South Korea follows with 62% reading physical books.

Rakuten Insight also surveyed the most popular book genres. Educational or self-help books were the most widely read, accounting for 34% of total respondents across the 13 countries.

Next were action & comedy books at 32%, and romance novels at 29%.

The survey involved 6,479 respondents across the Asia-Pacific region (China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Taiwan, India, South Korea, Singapore) plus the United States.

Data was collected in March 2023 using an online survey method from Rakuten Insight's specialized panel.
