These Are the Countries with the Most Data Breach Cases in the World, Q1 2023

Based on a report compiled by the American cybersecurity company Surfshark, 43.19 million accounts worldwide experienced data breaches in the first quarter of 2023. This represents a 43.8% decrease year-on-year (YoY) from the 76.8 million accounts breached in 2022.

Surfshark reports that Russia had the highest number of data breaches globally by the end of March 2023, recording 6.82 million breaches.

The United States followed in second place as the country with the most data breaches in the first three months of 2023, with 5.12 million breaches.

Taiwan and France were in third and fourth place, respectively, with a total of 3.9 million and 3.2 million breaches.

Other countries also experienced a significant number of data breaches. These include Spain, India, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Italy, and Japan, with the numbers shown in the graph.

"In Q1 2023, 333 accounts were compromised every minute. However, in Q2 2023, the breach rate increased by 201.3%, with 1,004 accounts compromised every 60 seconds," Surfshark wrote in its report.

Despite this, Surfshark's report indicates that the data breaches in Q1 2023 were the fewest in several years.
