The Walt Disney Company, a media and entertainment company, conducted mass layoffs affecting 7,000 employees.
As quoted by *Katadata.co.id* from *Reuters*, this decision was made to cut expenses after its streaming business incurred losses. Disney CEO, Bob Iger, stated that this step was "necessary to address the current economic challenges we face."
Iger said the company aims for cost savings of US$5.5 billion across the company. He believes the layoffs will contribute to this savings target.
However, Iger did not specify which departments would be affected by the layoffs. The company's streaming business lost approximately US$1.5 billion in the last three months.
"Our priority is the sustainable growth and profitability of our streaming business," Iger said.
Following the mass layoffs, Iger believes Disney+, one of its streaming services, will be profitable by the end of fiscal year 2024. "That remains our goal."
