An International Data Corporation (IDC) report shows that the Indonesian smartphone market rebounded towards the end of this year. A total of 8.9 million smartphone units were sold in Indonesia during Q3 2023, an 8.8% year-on-year (YoY) increase.
IDC Indonesia Associate Market Analyst Vanessa Aurelia stated that the growth in domestic smartphone shipments last quarter was seen across all price segments, primarily driven by smartphones priced above US$600.
Furthermore, Vanessa mentioned that growth was fueled by the launch of new foldable smartphones from Samsung and shipments of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 from Apple.
“The mid-range segment (priced) at US$200 to US$600 also grew by 16.8% YoY, driven by Samsung, Apple, and Oppo as vendors strengthened their portfolios in this segment,” said Vanessa in a press release cited from the IDC website on Thursday, November 16, 2023.
The low-end segment, priced below US$200, grew by 2.7% YoY after experiencing declines for several quarters, with intense competition between Transsion, vivo, Xiaomi, and realme.
Vanessa continued, vendors focusing on the more profitable higher price segments pushed the average selling price (ASP) to its eighth consecutive quarter of growth, with a 9% YoY increase in Q3 2023 to US$205.
Vanessa said IDC observed a recovery in smartphone shipments in Indonesia during Q3 2023. However, she believes vendors should remain cautious in strategizing to prevent excess inventory. This is in light of the still sluggish smartphone shipment results in Indonesia.
“Smartphone shipments for the whole of 2023 are expected to remain lower, or at best remain the same, compared to 2022,” said Vanessa.
Oppo Smartphone Becomes Indonesia's Best Seller
The IDC report indicates that Oppo surpassed Samsung as the top-selling smartphone vendor in Indonesia in Q3 2023.
Oppo's smartphone shipments reached 1.8 million units in Q3 2023, a 4.4% YoY decrease from 1.9 million units in Q3 2022.
“Oppo regained the top spot after previously being overtaken, with various new model releases driving growth across various price segments,” said Vanessa.
Samsung ranked second with 1.4 million units shipped. Shipments of the South Korean brand experienced the steepest decline at 17.8% YoY.
Next, Transsion ranked third with 1.4 million units shipped, a surge of 79.7% YoY. Xiaomi recorded 1.3 million units shipped, up 17.9% YoY.
Vivo's smartphone shipments decreased by 16.9% from 1.5 million units to 1.3 million units in Q3 2023. Meanwhile, shipments from other vendors jumped 50% YoY from 1.1 million units to 1.7 million units in Q3 2023.
