Indonesia's Largest Online Transportation Service Market in ASEAN

Online transportation in Southeast Asia underwent a transformation following the agreement between Uber and Grab. After this agreement, Uber ceased its transportation services in the ASEAN region. Meanwhile, Go-Jek, an Indonesian internet-based transportation service company, announced its expansion into Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Based on research by Google and Temasek, the gross merchandise value (GMV) of online transportation services in six Southeast Asian countries reached US$2.98 billion (Rp 43.2 trillion) in 2015. This figure comprised US$2.5 billion in transportation services and US$450 million in food delivery services. This then increased to US$7.9 billion (Rp 114 trillion) in 2018 and is projected to surge to US$29 billion (Rp 420 trillion) in 2025. In 2015, the average daily number of online transportation service users reached 1.5 million, increasing to 8 million per day in 2018.

Indonesia's transportation market share is the largest compared to other Southeast Asian countries. The GMV of domestic online transportation services reached US$980 million in 2015, increasing to US$3.78 billion in 2018 and projected to grow to US$14.5 billion in 2025. A population exceeding 260 million and the growth of internet users represent a significant potential market for an internet-based economy.
