The Indonesian government officially ceased analog TV broadcasts in Jabodetabek and replaced them with digital TV broadcasts starting Wednesday night (November 2, 2022).
"This migration from analog to digital TV, also known as the analog switch-off, marks a new era in Indonesian television broadcasting, starting from Jabodetabek and expanding to the entire archipelago," said Minister of Communication and Informatics Johnny G. Plate, as reported by Katadata.co.id on Thursday (November 3, 2022).
According to research firm Conviva, the trend of streaming, or watching digital content/broadcasts directly without downloading, is continuously strengthening worldwide.
In its September 2022 edition of the State of Streaming report, Conviva stated that the global duration of digital content/broadcast viewing increased by 14% (year-on-year/YoY) in the second quarter of 2022.
"The largest growth in streaming viewing duration was recorded in Asia, with a 90% year-on-year increase. Latin America saw a 70% growth, Oceania 26%, and Africa 22%," Conviva stated in its report.
Conviva noted that in the second quarter of 2022, the most digital content/broadcast viewing was done via Roku-branded connected TV devices.
Connected TV devices are auxiliary devices connected to regular televisions to receive digital broadcasts or data transfers, such as set-top boxes, TV sticks, and other digital media receivers.
Viewing duration of digital content/broadcasts via Roku-branded connected TV devices reached 30.5% of the total global streaming duration in the second quarter of 2022.
The next longest viewing durations were found on Fire TV-branded connected TV devices, followed by Samsung smart TVs and Android TVs.
Smart TVs are televisions with internet connectivity. Android TV is a smart TV integrated with Google's digital software and application system.
Conviva collects data on the use of these devices through a unique platform they developed. "(The Conviva platform) is embedded in 3.3 billion video streaming applications, measuring over 500 million unique viewers in over 180 countries," they said.
