Indonesia's Internet Penetration Increased During the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that 78.18% of households in Indonesia used the internet in 2020. This figure increased by 4.43 percentage points compared to the previous year, which was 73.75%.

This increase in internet penetration is in line with the restrictions on public activities during the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. Various activities, including working, studying, and shopping, were increasingly carried out from home using digital technology.

In addition to internet access, 18.83% of Indonesian households owned at least one computer, such as a desktop, laptop, or tablet. This percentage increased slightly from 18.78% in the previous year.

BPS also reported an improvement in Indonesia's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development. This is reflected in the ICT Development Index score, which rose by 5.08%, from 5.32 in 2019 to 5.59 in 2020.

The highest growth came from the usage indicator, which increased by 10.10%, from 4.85 to 5.34. Access and infrastructure increased by 2.53%, from 5.53 to 5.67. Finally, the skills indicator increased by 1.37%, from 5.84 to 5.92.
