Microsoft's big boss, Bill Gates, recently invested US$12 million (approximately Rp179 billion) in cattle feed. This special feed is designed to reduce cow flatulence and belching.
The funds were channeled through Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV), an investment firm founded by Bill Gates, to Rumin8, a startup company in Perth, Australia.
The cattle feed in question is made from seaweed. Its purpose is to reduce methane, a greenhouse gas produced by cow flatulence and belching.
A report from The Guardian states that a single cow can produce 200 kg of methane per year. Methane gas is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide, the primary cause of climate change and capable of damaging the Earth's atmosphere.
"There's a genuine desire to fund methane emissions from livestock and luckily for Rumin8, they can see the benefits of our technology," said David Messina, Managing Director of Rumin8, as quoted by The Guardian on Tuesday, January 24.
This is not the first time the world's fourth-richest person has made such an investment. Bill Gates, along with his ex-wife Melinda, through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is known to have donated US$10 billion (approximately Rp149 trillion) to humanitarian and health causes.
