What Actions Do People Take to Prevent Hoaxes? Survey Results

Most Indonesians believe that the spread of hoaxes can be prevented by double-checking circulating information.
This is evident from a survey report resulting from a collaboration between the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) and the Katadata Insight Center (KIC), entitled *Digital Literacy Status in Indonesia 2022*.
"In an effort to prevent the spread of hoax news, 80.4% of respondents will search for the truth of the information received," stated the Kominfo Ministry team in their report.
Furthermore, 15.3% of respondents believe that hoaxes can be prevented by reprimanding those who spread them, 8.3% of respondents report hoax spreaders to the relevant media platforms, and 4.2% of respondents take other actions.
However, although the majority of respondents consider checking the truth of information important, not many are accustomed to doing so.
"Only about 48% of respondents check every image, video, news item, website, and post on social media," said the Kominfo Ministry team.
Among respondents who regularly perform checks, 39.5% verify news through internet search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Yandex.
Then, 4.1% check the truth of news through fact-checking websites such as turnbackhoax.id, cekfakta.com, and trustpositif.kominfo.go.id.
Others check information through friends, family, teachers, neighbors, or community leaders (3.5%), social media (2.1%), chatbots (1.4%), online news (0.2%), and television (0.1%).
The Kominfo Ministry and KIC conducted this survey on 10,000 internet users aged 13-70 years spread across 34 provinces and 514 regencies/cities in Indonesia.
The survey was conducted during August-September 2022 through face-to-face interviews. Sampling was done using a multistage random sampling method, with a margin of error of approximately 0.98% and a 95% confidence interval.
