List of the Biggest Mass Layoffs by Tech Startups in 2022: Twitter is Second!

The wave of mass layoffs at startups and global tech giants continued into 2022. One of the companies with the largest layoffs this year is Twitter.

Following the acquisition of Twitter, billionaire Elon Musk laid off 3,700 employees in early November. This number of layoffs ranks second largest globally, according to data from Layoffs.fyi.

The new Twitter boss explained that the layoffs were due to the company experiencing losses of approximately US$4 million, or around Rp62.82 billion (at an exchange rate of Rp15,707 per US dollar), every day.

"The reduction in Twitter's workforce is because the company is losing more than US$4 million per day," he stated via his Twitter account @elonmusk last Saturday (November 5th).

Musk continued, stating that all departing employees were offered three months' severance pay. "50% more than legally required," he said.

Besides Twitter, several other startups and tech giants also conducted large-scale layoffs this year.

For example, the quick commerce startup Getir laid off 4,480 employees in May 2022. This number of startup employees laid off is the highest this year.

Layoff.fyi recorded 104,066 employees laid off from the beginning of January to November 7, 2022. These hundreds of thousands of employees were laid off by 755 global startups.
