ChatGPT is a chatbot based on artificial intelligence (AI) that can interact through text-based conversations.

Since its launch in late 2022, ChatGPT has been widely accessed by users worldwide. However, like other technology applications, ChatGPT also carries the risk of data breaches.

Singaporean cybersecurity intelligence firm Group-IB revealed that 101,134 ChatGPT user data points were leaked on the dark web in the past year.

"Many companies integrate ChatGPT into their operational workflows. Given that the standard ChatGPT configuration stores all conversations, this can inadvertently expose sensitive data to hackers," said Group-IB Head of Threat Intelligence Dmitry Shestakov in a press release on Tuesday (June 20, 2023).

Between June 2022 and May 2023, the peak of ChatGPT user data breaches occurred in May 2023, with a total of 26,802 accounts compromised.

Of the 101,000 recorded cases, India had the highest number of data breaches, reaching 12,600 accounts.

This was followed by Pakistan and Brazil, with 9,200 and 6,500 compromised ChatGPT user accounts respectively.

Indonesia ranked ninth with 2,500 accounts experiencing data breaches.

The information collected by hackers included email accounts, bank card details, cryptocurrency wallet information, browsing history, and various other details obtained from business users.

Group-IB also revealed that most of the logs containing compromised ChatGPT accounts were hacked using Raccoon, Vidar, and Redline. These are malware used by hackers to steal information.
