Based on a Populix survey of 1,096 Indonesian workers, students, entrepreneurs, and housewives, 95% (1,036 people) chose to buy a new phone rather than a used one.

Of those who chose to buy a new phone, the majority (61%) cited their old phone being broken or unusable.

Furthermore, 59% of respondents opted for a new phone because of its guaranteed quality.

Another 40% bought a new phone because they believed it would last longer than a used one.

Additionally, 22% of respondents purchased a new phone due to the availability of a warranty. The remaining 11% cited following trends as their reason.

The survey also revealed that respondents preferred buying new phones from offline stores (77%) over online stores (23%). The top reason was the perceived greater safety and trustworthiness of offline purchases.

Populix conducted this online survey from August 9-14, 2023. Of the 1,036 respondents, the proportion of men and women was evenly split at 50% each.

The majority of respondents were from Java (45%), followed by Sumatra (5%), with the remaining 50% from other islands. Respondents ranged in age from 17 to 55 years old, with the 17-25 age group dominating at 57%, and the 26-35 age group at 28%.
