Unable to Upload Videos Anymore, Russia's TikTok Users—the Fourth Largest in the World

TikTok blocked video uploads and live streaming for its Russian users starting Sunday (March 6th). This blocking was implemented to protect TikTok employees and users from the threat of legal action under Russia's newly enacted "fake news" law.

Previously, on Friday (March 4th), the Russian government issued a new law stating that those spreading "false information" about the Russian military could face up to 15 years in prison. Those calling for sanctions against Russia also face fines.

Citing Data Reportal, Russia has the fourth largest number of TikTok users globally. As of January 2022, there were 54.9 million active TikTok users in Russia.

The number of TikTok users in Russia is surpassed by three countries: the United States with 131 million users, Indonesia with 92.1 million users, and Brazil with 74.1 million users.

Although video uploads are no longer possible, TikTok still allows users in Russia to send messages through the app.

This Chinese social media platform is one of many restricted since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Previously, Russia blocked Facebook and restricted access to Twitter. In addition, Western media outlets are also prohibited from operating in Russia.
