The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that 5,705 villages in Indonesia had no cellular phone signal in 2020. This number is equivalent to 6.79% of the 84,038 villages in the country.
However, cellular phone signal services improved in 2020. This is reflected in the decrease in the number of villages without cellular phone signals in 2020 compared to the previous year, which was 5,972 villages or 7.11%.
As many as 17,281 villages, or 20.56%, received weak cellular phone signals in 2020. This number also decreased compared to the previous year, which was 19,771 villages or 23.56%.
On the other hand, the number of villages receiving strong cellular phone signals increased. In 2019, 58,194 villages or 69.33% received a strong phone signal, while in 2020, this number increased to 61,052 villages or 72.65%.
By region, cellular phone signal reception in Maluku and Papua lags behind other regions in Indonesia. In 2020, 41.06% of villages in these regions did not receive a cellular phone signal, 27.14% received a weak signal, and only 31.80% received a strong cellular phone signal.
