According to Databoks research, most Indonesian netizens position the conflict in the Middle East as a trigger for the global energy crisis.
When looking at the public's sentiment on social media towards the impact of the energy crisis, particularly related to prices and the economy, netizens' perceptions are predominantly negative, reaching 57.7%.
This is because public conversations highlight concerns about rising fuel prices and global oil prices, and link them to conflicts in the Middle East and energy supply disruptions.
"The public also shows pessimism about the further impact on the economy, including inflation pressure, a weakening exchange rate, and potential commodity shortages," Databoks found in its study on the Energy Sector in the Midst of Geopolitical Pressures.
When broken down by platform, negative sentiments related to the energy crisis are more dominant on X, reaching 61.4%.
On the former Twitter platform, negative conversations predominantly focus on concerns about the surge in global oil prices linked to inflation pressure and a weakening exchange rate.
Meanwhile, negative sentiments on Instagram stand at 58.6%. Conversations on this platform highlight criticism of persistently high domestic fuel prices despite falling global oil prices.
On TikTok, negative sentiments related to the energy crisis stand at 53.4%. Here, netizens often voice satire and criticism of fuel price increases that they perceive as a burden on society.
Additionally, the public links geopolitical tensions to surging oil prices and economic pressures that impact the domestic economy.
"The public also complains about the impact on industries and the economy, including a slowdown in manufacturing sector activity due to global energy pressures," Databoks explained.
Databoks collected data from February 28 to April 20, 2026 using crawling and scraping methods, as well as a keyword-based approach related to the energy crisis and oil price dynamics.
Subsequently, a relevance filtering process was conducted. The results of the relevant content screening on TikTok amounted to 24,327 pieces of content, X 12,308 pieces of content, and Instagram 6,776 pieces of content.
In the analysis phase, the research focused on substantive narrative content, i.e. content with a length of more than 200 characters, so not all relevant data were used.
