According to data from the Ministry of Manpower, approximately 10,000 people experienced job termination (PHK) in Indonesia during the January-September 2022 period.
During this period, the most significant number of layoffs occurred in Banten, with 3,700 affected individuals. Following Banten were DKI Jakarta, East Java, South Kalimantan, and Riau Islands, with details as shown in the graph.
However, the number of job termination victims in Indonesia is now estimated to have increased drastically.
Recently, several local technology startups have conducted large-scale employee layoffs, but these figures are not yet recorded in the Ministry of Manpower's database.
PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk, for example, laid off 1,300 employees in November 2022. In the same month, large startups such as SIRCLO Group and Ruangguru also laid off hundreds of employees.
Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK) Muhadjir Effendy even stated that the number of workers in labor-intensive industries affected by job termination this year has reached hundreds of thousands, tens of times higher than the Ministry of Manpower's data.
"Job terminations are approaching 500,000, and if there is no immediate control, it could reach 1.5 million. This requires anticipation and handling," said Menko PMK Muhadjir Effendy in a press release on his official website, Thursday (17/11/2022).
