Kumparan surveyed public opinion on who is responsible for regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in Indonesia.
The results showed that 66% of respondents believe that AI provider companies are the parties that should be responsible.
"This finding strengthens the assumption that global companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are considered more professional, transparent, and have high security standards thanks to their international reputation," said Kumparan in the Indonesia AI Report 2025.
Other parties also deemed responsible include the public (56%), the central government (55%), and educational and research institutions (38%).
"The public believes that responsibility for AI governance can no longer be top-down, but rather needs to be collaborative between the state, industry, and the public," said Kumparan.
Furthermore, 30% of respondents believe that international organizations such as the UN and UNESCO need to be involved in AI regulation, and 26% believe it is also the responsibility of local governments.
Kumparan conducted this survey online with 1,000 respondents, with 50% distributed in Jabodetabek and the other 50% spread across Surabaya, Medan, Makassar, Denpasar, and Balikpapan.
Respondents had educational backgrounds ranging from high school to master's degree, with a gender proportion of 50% male and 50% female.
In terms of age groups, respondents consisted of 50% Gen Z (18-28 years old) and 50% millennials (29-44 years old).
