According to Source of Asia research, debit and credit cards are the primary payment methods for e-commerce transactions in Southeast Asia.

This is evident in the high gross merchandise value (GMV) of e-commerce transactions paid for via cards.

Here's a breakdown of Southeast Asia's e-commerce GMV in 2021 and its projected value in 2026, by payment method:

Cards

• 2021: US$42.7 billion
• 2026: US$93.9 billion

Domestic Payment Methods

• 2021: US$38.7 billion
• 2026: US$89.5 billion

Digital Wallets

• 2021: US$31.5 billion
• 2026: US$88.3 billion

Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL)

• 2021: US$1.2 billion
• 2026: US$17 billion

Alternative Payment Methods (e.g., cash)

• 2021: US$28.3 billion
• 2026: US$25.6 billion

Source of Asia also predicts that digital payment methods will dominate e-commerce transactions in Southeast Asia this year.

"By 2025, digital payments are projected to account for 91% of total e-commerce payments," Source of Asia stated in its report (January 22, 2025).

"Furthermore, alternative payment options, including mobile payments and BNPL services, are gaining popularity in line with evolving modern consumer preferences," it continued.
