Statista's analysis of Semrush data reveals numerous sources cited by large language models (LLMs) to provide information for AI.
The analyzed AI includes ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI overviews, and Google AI Mode. A total of 150,000 citations were found from 5,000 randomly selected keywords in the Semrush database.
Reddit emerged as the largest source of information, accounting for 40.1% of total citations, surpassing Google, YouTube, and Wikipedia.
Statista notes that LLMs have extensive access to user-driven discussion libraries on the platform, facilitated by a US$60 million API agreement with Google in 2024. As of the first quarter of 2025, the platform boasted 108 million daily active global users.
Following Reddit are Wikipedia (26.3%), YouTube (23.5%), Google (23.3%), Yelp (21%), and Facebook (20%).
Other sources, including Amazon, TripAdvisor, Mapbox, and OpenStreetMap, each contributed less than 20%.
"The rise of AI-generated content is transforming how people seek information online. AI-driven content now fuels discovery and interaction, shaping the answers provided by chatbots and search engines across various platforms," Statista wrote on Friday, August 8, 2025.
Statista explains that the transformative impact of generative AI on search, marketing, and media consumption necessitates adaptation for both users and businesses in this rapidly evolving landscape.
"The authenticity, quality of content, and data privacy are critical concerns. More than ever, Reddit is not just a forum, but a vital channel for achieving visibility in an AI-driven world," Statista wrote.
