The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) reports that over 205,000 professional service robots were sold globally in 2023. This represents a 30% year-on-year (YoY) increase.
"The service robotics industry is booming – more and more robots are serving on factory floors, in shopping malls, or assisting with deliveries on the road," said IFR President Marina Bill in her report.
Transportation and logistics were the sectors that utilized the most professional robots, reaching 113,000 units in 2023. Sales grew by 35% YoY from 2022.
The IFR notes that the high adoption of professional robots in this sector is driven by a shortage of skilled labor, leading to increased demand for technological support.
"For example, one of the most time-consuming tasks for truck drivers is the process of loading and unloading goods, which can now be automated with robot-based solutions," the IFR wrote.
Next, the use of professional robots in the hospitality sector reached 54,400 units in 2023, up 31% YoY. One application is for information and guidance services in public areas.
Professional robots were also widely used in the agricultural industry, with total sales of 20,000 units, followed by professional cleaning robots at 12,000 units, and medical and healthcare robots at 6,200 units.
