China to Become World's Largest Silicon Producer in 2024

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports that estimated global silicon metal production reached 4.6 million metric tons in 2024. This volume increased by 7.47% from 2023, which was 4.28 million metric tons.

Based on production, China is the leading producer, with an estimated output of 3.9 million metric tons in 2024, up from 3.63 million metric tons in 2023.

The USGS also reports that China's ferrosilicon production was 3.64 million metric tons in 2023, increasing to 3.5 million metric tons in 2024.

"China accounts for nearly 80% of the total estimated global production of silicon materials in 2024," the USGS wrote in its *Mineral Commodity Summaries 2025* report, cited on Monday (February 3, 2025).

Brazil is second, with an estimated production of 190,000 metric tons, down from 196,000 tons in 2023.

Norway follows in third place, with an estimated production of 120,000 metric tons, also down from 123,000 in 2023.

Other countries in the top 10 include France, Germany, Russia, and South Africa.
