Internet Subscription Costs in Remote Areas of Indonesia

According to a survey by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), 10.4% of the population in underdeveloped areas subscribe to fixed internet services monthly.

In this group, 38.7% of respondents spent between Rp300,000 and Rp500,000 per month on internet subscriptions.

Furthermore, 37.5% of respondents spent between Rp100,000 and Rp300,000; 15.5% spent less than Rp100,000; and 7.7% spent more than Rp500,000 per month.

APJII also surveyed the reasons why people in underdeveloped areas subscribe to fixed internet services. The results showed that the majority, or 56.5%, use this service because it is accessible to all family members.

Then, 19% considered it cheaper; 11.99% stated that the connection was more stable; and 8.9% cited the absence of data quotas.

This APJII survey involved 1,950 respondents from 64 underdeveloped areas spread across 17 provinces. Data collection was conducted from July to September 2024 through face-to-face and telephone interviews.

According to the Regulation of the Minister of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration (Permendes-PDTT) Number 11 of 2020, "underdeveloped areas" are districts whose regions and communities are less developed than other regions on a national scale.

59.23% of respondents were male and the remaining 40.77% were female. Respondents were dominated by millennials aged 28-43 years (40.10%), followed by Generation Z aged 12-27 years (34.36%), and Generation X aged 44-59 years (6.05%).
