A report by Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), *Indonesia Telecommunication Statistics 2023*, reveals a gap between internet access among citizens/households and computer ownership over the past four years.

"Households accessing the internet have experienced a very rapid increase, while households owning or possessing computers have remained relatively unchanged," BPS wrote in the report published on Friday (30/8/2024).

Households with internet access were recorded at 78.18% in 2020. This figure then rose to 82.07% in 2021.

Internet access increased significantly in 2022 to 86.54%, and further rose to 87.09% in 2023.

In contrast, computer ownership stood at 18.83% in 2020. This then decreased to 18.24% in 2021.

The proportion further decreased in 2022 to 18.04%, but saw a slight increase to 18.06% in 2023.

"This can be attributed to the increasing ease of internet access through various media such as Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) technology, internet facilities at offices/schools, and mobile phones," BPS stated, explaining the reason for the decrease in computer ownership.
