Indonesia's Internet Penetration Shows Positive Growth Over the Last Decade

Internet penetration in Indonesia has continued to grow over the last decade.

According to a report by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in 2023, the percentage of the Indonesian population aged 5 and over who had ever accessed the internet reached 69.21%.

Compared to 2013, this proportion has surged by more than 300%. At that time, only 14.94% of the Indonesian population accessed the internet.

However, internet penetration in Indonesia is still uneven. The proportion of the population aged 5 and over who had ever accessed the internet in urban areas was recorded at 76.80%. Meanwhile, in rural areas, the proportion was only 59.33%.

The province with the highest proportion of residents aged 5 and over who had ever accessed the internet in 2023 was the Riau Islands, at 86.71%.

This was followed by DKI Jakarta at 86.50%, East Kalimantan at 80.46%, and Yogyakarta Special Region at 78.61%.

Meanwhile, the lowest percentage was in Papua, at only 29.87%. This was followed by East Nusa Tenggara at 51.06%, North Maluku at 53.48%, and Maluku at 53.48%.

The location most frequently chosen by people to access the internet was their own home, with a proportion of 96.46% in 2023.

This was followed by public places at 45.43%, while on the move at 31.55%, workplaces or offices at 27.83%, and schools at 12.15%.
