ChatGPT, the World's Most Popular AI Chatbot Application in 2023

According to a Business of Apps report, around 200 million people globally used artificial intelligence (AI) applications in 2023. The majority used chatbot applications—AI that can converse with users.

In 2023, ChatGPT was the most downloaded chatbot application globally, reaching 209 million downloads.

"ChatGPT is not only capable of answering user questions, but it's also used for writing computer programs, creating essays and music, generating business ideas, and translating text," wrote Business of Apps in its report.

Following ChatGPT, Chat & Ask was downloaded 43.9 million times. Nova completed the top three, with 37.7 million global downloads. Nova also uses GPT-3 and GPT-4 technology developed by OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT.

10. Perplexity: 6.7 million downloads
11. Claude: 0.5 million downloads

Business of Apps estimates that the global AI application sector generated US$1.8 billion in revenue throughout 2023. This is projected to grow to US$18.8 billion by 2028.
