Based on data from the Southeast Asia Freedom of Expression Network (SAFEnet), there were 61 digital security incidents in Indonesia during the first quarter of 2024.
These incidents comprised 13 in January, 20 in February, and 27 in March 2024.
"This number is almost double the number of incidents in the same period the previous year, a difference of 28 incidents," SAFEnet wrote in a report cited on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
In the first three months of 2023, SAFEnet recorded 33 incidents: 13 in January, 8 in February, and 12 in March.
"This means that there was an average of 11 incidents in the first three months of last year, while this year the average is 16.25 incidents per month," SAFEnet stated.
SAFEnet assesses that incidents with political motives remain the primary suspected cause of digital attacks this year. This is related to the 2024 General Election and criticism of the government and presidential/vice-presidential candidates.
SAFEnet cites the case of @veenarooth, a Twitter account that on February 16, 2024, posted a statement deemed offensive to one of the candidate pairs, resulting in the account's suspension.
Another incident involved Koentjoro Soeparno, a Professor of Psychology at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Yogyakarta, and several colleagues who experienced repeated threats and intimidation after participating in the Bulaksumur petition and the "Kampus Menggugat" (Campus Protests) action on Saturday, March 16, 2024. The threats came via WhatsApp (WA) messages and anonymous phone calls.
SAFEnet uses three main sources to monitor the situation regarding digital rights. First, direct reports to the digital rights violation complaint platform managed by SAFEnet at aduan.safenet.or.id.
Second, complaints via SAFEnet's social media accounts and helpline. Third, monitoring other sources, including mainstream media, social media, and alternative media.
