A hacker known as Bjorka leaked the personal data of Indonesia's Minister of Communication and Information, Johnny G. Plate, on social media in early September 2022. This hacker also claimed to have breached the data of several other government institutions.
The Communication & Information System Security Research Center (CISSReC), a research institution, estimates that Bjorka leaked 679,180 documents related to the presidency, including confidential letters from the State Intelligence Agency (BIN).
CISSReC Chairman Pratama Prasadha considers Bjorka a clever hacker skilled at concealing his identity, and unique for understanding the Indonesian context.
"Usually, foreign hackers who steal data from Indonesia only sell it. They don't understand the content or the political implications. Bjorka, however, understands this very well, even profiling several Indonesian officials," said Pratama, as reported by *Katadata.co.id* on Sunday, September 12, 2022.
According to the *Data Breach Investigation Report 2022* (DBIR), financial gain is not the only motive behind hacking.
"Most data thieves are professional criminals who steal information to sell. But, starting in 2011, we saw a significant change with the emergence of hacktivism against large organizations worldwide," explains DBIR.
Hacktivism comes from the words 'hack' and 'activism,' meaning hacking actions for the purpose of protest, criticism, or promoting a specific ideology.
Of all the global data breaches recorded by DBIR in 2021, 96% were financially motivated. 3% were motivated by social protest or hacktivism, 2% were for fun or mischief, and 1% were due to personal revenge.
Bjorka revealed his reasons for hacking Minister Johnny G. Plate's data.
"The top leader in technology should be assigned to someone who understands, not a politician and not someone from the armed forces, because they are just fools," Bjorka wrote in English on his Twitter account @bjorkanism on Saturday, September 10, 2022.
Shortly after, the @bjorkanism account was suspended by Twitter on Sunday, September 11, 2022.
