According to Kemenhub spokesperson Adita Irawati, this new policy aims to establish Indonesian airports as international flight hubs or feeders.
"Previously, most international airports only served international flights to a few specific countries and not long-haul flights, so international hubs were enjoyed by other countries," said Adita in a statement on Friday (April 26, 2024).
Kemenhub also reduced the number of international airports for efficiency.
"Several countries have also adjusted the number of their international airports. For example, India, with a population of 1.42 billion, only has 35 international airports. The United States, with a population of 399.9 million, manages 18 international airports," she said.
Although there are currently only 17 international airports in Indonesia, domestic airports can still temporarily serve international flights for specific purposes.
These specific purposes include state activities, international events, Hajj embarkation and disembarkation, activities to support national economic growth, and disaster response.
This can be done after obtaining permission from the Minister of Transportation, in accordance with the Minister of Transportation Regulation Number PM 40/2023.
