Smart City Technology Readiness in Asia-Pacific

The McKinsey Global Institute examined the level of technological readiness for smart cities worldwide. The assessment was based on sensors, communication infrastructure, and data portal transparency. Jakarta, representing Indonesia, scored only 8.8 points out of a possible 37.

The Asia-Pacific region included 16 cities in the study. Singapore achieved the highest level of readiness, scoring 25 points, with communication infrastructure representing the largest portion of its score. Seoul, South Korea, ranked second with a total of 24.3 points.

Smart cities leverage data and digital technologies to improve decision-making and enhance quality of life. Three key layers contribute to a smart city: Firstly, the technological infrastructure—smartphones and sensors connected via high-bandwidth communication networks. Secondly, specific applications. Thirdly, the utilization of these applications and facilities by government, businesses, and the public.
