Searches for keywords related to staple goods on Google's shopping feature increased by 24% in Q1 2022 (year-on-year/YoY).

According to a Google Trends report, the highest increase was seen in searches for the keyword "vegetables," which rose by 90% (YoY) in Q1 2022.

Searches related to "salt" increased by 60% and "honey" by 50% (YoY).

Searches related to "noodles," "eggs," and "milk" increased by 25%, 22%, and 18% (YoY), respectively.

"This presents a significant opportunity for online sellers," explained Google Indonesia Managing Director Randy Jusuf in a press release on Thursday (12/5/2022).

"The pandemic added 21 million internet users in Indonesia by the end of the first half of 2021. Therefore, it's not surprising that so many users are now shopping for staple goods online," Randy continued.

However, Randy estimates that current online staple food shopping activity remains low.

"The e-Conomy report shows that in Southeast Asia, online staple food purchases account for only 2%, compared to 25% of the population who now enjoy shopping online for products other than staple foods," said Randy.
