A Cento Ventures report shows that investment in Southeast Asian startups reached US$14.2 billion in 2021. Indonesia received the majority of this funding, accounting for 42%.
This means that funding for Indonesian startups last year totaled approximately US$5.96 billion, or around Rp86.07 trillion (using an exchange rate of US$1 = Rp14,442).
This percentage maintains Indonesia's position as the top recipient of startup funding in Southeast Asia since 2017. However, the investment percentage decreased compared to 2020 (68%) and 2019 (53%).
“While Indonesia continues to attract the largest share of capital, Singapore and the Philippines significantly increased their shares,” according to the Cento Ventures report titled ‘SE Asia tech Investment 2021,’ released Wednesday (April 27th).
Singapore accounted for 34% of startup investment last year, while Vietnam accounted for 10%.
In terms of the number of startup investments, Indonesia has consistently lagged behind Singapore since 2017. Last year, Indonesia only received 24% of the total number of investments, compared to Singapore's 40%.
In total, Cento Ventures recorded 942 investment deals in Southeast Asia last year, a significant increase from 700 in 2020.
Large-scale funding (over US$100 million) was the biggest contributor in Southeast Asia, accounting for 52% of total startup investment in the region.
