Kompas Research and Development (Litbang Kompas) conducted a poll on what the government should do to eradicate online gambling.
The results show that the majority, or 65.5% of respondents, believe the government should prioritize blocking related websites and applications.
"This means that the proliferation of online gambling websites and applications is still escaping government oversight, especially the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) which has the mandate in this area," wrote the Litbang Kompas team in their report on Tuesday (25/6/2024).
Furthermore, 33.4% of respondents believe online gamblers should be more strictly prosecuted, and 30.5% want the government to arrest online gambling operators and perpetrators.
"Online gambling perpetrators are also considered to have caused public anxiety and influenced new players," said the Litbang Kompas team.
There were also 17.2% of respondents who felt that online gambling perpetrators should undergo rehabilitation to prevent further involvement, and 2% answered "don't know".
Litbang Kompas also found that 57.3% of respondents felt the government was not serious in eradicating online gambling, while 32.4% of respondents felt the opposite, and 10.3% did not know.
This Litbang Kompas survey involved 534 respondents selected proportionally across 38 Indonesian provinces. The survey used multiple response, allowing respondents to choose more than one answer.
Data collection was conducted from June 18-20, 2024, through telephone interviews. The survey's margin of error is approximately 4.22% with a 95% confidence level, under conditions of simple random sampling.
