Southeast Asia's Online Media Transactions Reached US$11.4 Billion in 2018

Based on Google and Temasek research, the Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of online media in Southeast Asia reached US$11.4 billion (equivalent to Rp 153 trillion) in 2018. This figure comprises online advertising (US$7 billion), online games (US$3.8 billion), and online music and video services (US$0.4 billion). Online media transactions in the six ASEAN member countries grew by 44% (CAGR) compared to 2015 and are projected to surge to US$32 billion by 2025.

Online advertising is the largest segment of the online media market, estimated at US$7 billion in 2018. The significant size of this market is driven by the proliferation of digital marketing investments through platforms such as online shopping applications, news websites, search engines, social media, and video streaming services. Therefore, advertisers can increasingly reach consumers as more people use internet-based applications.

The GMV of internet-based advertising in Indonesia reached only US$600 million in 2015 but increased to US$2.7 billion in 2018. This figure is projected to further grow to US$8 billion by 2025.
